Why Terrell Owens Won't Be On The Jets

I know all of the New York Jets fans are excited for the upcoming season. You overachieved last season and a few players emerged as future stars in this league. You spent the off-season acquiring high-profile players in hopes of making a championship run this year. The rumor is that the Jets are now targeting Terrell Owens to sign with the team. Why would the Jets sign T.O. when they already have a wide-receiving corps able to handle the "run-first" offense? Here are some of the reasons why Ownes will not be playing for the Jets this season.

First, you have to look at the wide-receiving corps and realize that there isn't any room for him on the roster. He would be steaming on the sidelines waiting for a 4-wide set to be called. Mark Sanchez already has Santonio Holmes, Braylon Edwards, Jerricho Cotchery, Dustin Keller, David Clowney, and Brad Smith to catch the ball. I know Holmes will have to sit out the first few games this season, but when he comes back, he would jump right into that #1 or #2 receiving role. Sanchez isn't going to be out there throwing the ball 40 times a game. Rex Ryan will still be trying to manage the game and let his defense win games.

Next up, the sheer thought of having Braylon Edwards and Terrell Owens on the same team is spine-tingling. How many balls would this duo total? 40? It would be a safer bet to throw screen passes to LaDanian Tomlinson and let him get his usual 2.5 yards (he's washed up).

The Jets can't turn into the Washington Redskins and try to sign free-agents who are 2-3 years past their prime. It will get butts in the seats, but from what I know about NFL games, only the Jacksonville Jaguars have trouble in that department. Fans will go to Jets games and scream "J-E-T-S Jets, Jets, Jets" even if their starting quarterback was Justin Bieber and "The Situation" was their running back.

The chemistry of the team is important, especially one that goes into a season with high hopes. If they start out the year 2-3 or 3-4, people of T.O.'s ilk will start trying to motivate the team and there will be too many chiefs and not enough indians. You can't load a team up with veterans with a young quarterback. Sanchez will have to start being the leader of this team and get into the faces of players trying to cause trouble. I'm not sure if T.O. could handle another young quarterback trying to get into his face.

The Jets will be a good team this season, no doubt about it. They shouldn't be trying to reach. Their team is solid and they should just stand pat. Who knows, all of this could just be driven by the PR Machine of Drew Rosenhaus. He could be trying to drive up the price that the Cincinnati Bengals have to pay to sign Owens. The Bengals and Rams were the only two teams in the hunt a few days ago, and it appears that the Rams have fell out of the running. If that is the case, Rosenhaus, you got me again...show T.O. the money!

Why Buffalo Is the Worst Team In The NFL

I'm sorry St. Louis Rams fans, your team is not the worst in the league. The Buffalo Bills took that spot when the Browns beat them 6-3 on Sunday. Derek Anderson went 2-17 for 23 yards and still managed to beat the Bills. Why are the Bills so bad? We look at the signings and the overall management of this team to find out what went wrong.

Two seasons ago, the Bills was thought to have a coming out party against the Cowboys on Monday Night Football. They made Tony Romo look like Ryan Leaf and the team looked like a team on the rise. Buffalo went out and signed some free-agents and wasted some draft picks since then. Dick Jauron hasn't exactly gotten the most out of the talent either. Here are a list of some of the players on the team and why they haven't lived up to their potential.

Trent Edwards - I don't know why the weight of the franchise was ever on him. Didn't anyone watch him at Stanford? He was only 10-20 as a starting quarterback and was injury-prone. He has kept up the injuries, but why draft this guy in the 3rd-round and tag him as the franchise quarterback? It was a horrible draft class for quarterbacks, you should just picked up Jeff Garcia and bought yourself a year and got a QB from the 2008 class.

Marcus Stroud - He was a beast in Jacksonville, but once he arrived in Buffalo, he was a shall of himself. He has done a decent job so far this year (27 tackles), but he is not the game-changer that you thought he was.

Marshawn Lynch - He had a nice year and a half with Buffalo, then some of the off-the-field problems started to happen. He's still a nice back, but if he keeps it up, you'll have to deal him. The Bills should probably try to get what they can for him this off-season why they can. If he gets in trouble again, it's a bigger suspension and you'll only get 20 cents on the dollar for him. Fred Jackson looks like a nice back, pay him and get rid of Lynch.

Terrell Owens - Really Buffalo? C'mon! You saw what he did to McNabb, Garcia, and Romo, right? He's only useful when your team is winning. Buffalo couldn't have expected to win the AFC East this year, so why even bother? I know you need to sell tickets or try to get Canada to all pinch in their maple leafs in and just buy the team, but this was just a publicity stunt. He's going to have his worst professional year, he'll latch on to some team next year and completely rip the Bills.

Josh Reed - This guy has the hands of Marvin Harrison, but probably the speed of Harrison Ford. He's a very good possession receiver, why can't you use him as a Wes Welker slot option? It seems like he could be a 60-70 catch guy in the right system. Buffalo is not the right system for him.

James Hardy - This guy should be your future at wide receiver. I'm not saying that just because he's from my old stomping grounds of Fort Wayne. I watched him play at Indiana most weeks and he is a game-changer at that position. He took some of the best Big Ten secondaries to task. He has two touchdown receptions so far this season for Buffalo. The way things look, two might be enough to be the team lead for the season.

Jason Peters - You trade your starting left tackle to Philadelphia for a sixth-round pick? I know he gave up 11 1/2 sacks last year, but he's better than anything you have. What is your thinking? Trent Edwards doesn't need that much time to hand off to Marshawn Lynch? You sign T.O. and you leave your quarterback's blind side vulnerable, a brilliant move there Buffalo.

Donte Whitner - He's a great safety, but unfortunately he's on a very bad defense. He has lived up to his potential, but he has to be counting the seasons left on his contract so he can get out of Buffalo.

Turk Schonert - You fired your offensive coordinator, Turk Schonert, right before the season begins. Was this a scape goat move by the higher up management or coach? You know the team is bad and you just need an excuse. "Hey, it's not my fault we are losing, we had to fire the offensive coordinator right before the season." That could usually buy you another year if your head coach wasn't already on the hot seat. Oh yeah, you promote former back-up quarterback, Alex Van Pelt, as your offensive coordinator when you fired Schonert. He has only been out of the league for maybe three seasons, but now looks like a former offensive lineman. He probably gets winded just calling in plays to Edwards.

Dick Jauron - Finally, the head coach of the Buffalo Bills. I go against the common NFL fan laws and I am a fan of the Indianapolis Colts and Chicago Bears. I can usually get away with it, since they are in different conferences, but when they met in the Super Bowl, it was a rough one. Now to my point, I watch Jauron sink potentially great Chicago Bears teams into the ground. Some guys aren't great coaches, they may look like one when the team's talent surpasses the coach's inabilities, but eventually Jauron gets hold of the team and just strangles it to death. I think after the third-straight season of going 7-9, the Bills would understand that they don't have another Marv Levy as their head coach. I think Jauron needs to resign or the Bills should fire him. I don't know who on their staff would step in, maybe defensive coordinator, Perry Fewell?

The Buffalo Bills has gone the entire decade of the 00's without a single playoff appearance. The franchise used to be so revered and respected, but hasn't had any success since Bill Polian left for Indianapolis. I used to like watching the Bills when Thurman Thomas, Andre Reed, and Cornelius Bennett made playing in Ralph Wilson stadium one of the toughest places to play. The team needs a complete overhaul in management and at a few main positions if they want to sniff the playoffs anytime soon. Could they possibly coax Jim Kelly out of retirement?

Unused NFL Nicknames

I'm growing tired of the nicknames players either give themselves or announcers coin a nickname by used first initial and the beginning of last name (A-Rod). Also, enough with the recycling of nicknames, LaDanian Tomlinson is not "LT," that nickname should only be used for Lawrence Taylor. My list of nicknames are ones the players never use, because most of them I made myself.
Use them in sentences and blog posts, let's get these in the vernacular of sports fan and establish them in the sports lexicon. Okay, I'll stop using words that I learned in Linguistics class.

Maurice Jones-Drew - The Hyphen

Peyton Manning - The Good Son

LaDanian Tomlinson - The Forgotten

"Hard Knocks" Is The Best Thing On TV

I didn't get into the television series "Hard Knocks" until last season. I didn't have HBO, so I didn't get to see this amazing series. Last season the series followed the Kansas City Chiefs through training camp. It made the uninteresting Chiefs into something must-see. Even though I got to know more about Bobby Sippio and Larry Johnson than I should, it gives you an insider's view of what goes on in the preparation of an NFL team.

"Hard Knocks" is following the Dallas Cowboys this season and it is as interesting as it sounds. You get to see a different side of every major player on "America's Team." I've seen the first four episodes of the season and episode five will be shown this weekend. My only suggestion is that they show Marion Barber, he must be a pretty bland guy. They have been showing how well Felix Jones is playing, yet the starter, Barber, hasn't even been mentioned. Here are some of things I've noticed about the players that they are featuring.

Tank Johnson - He loves the "f" word and when they end team meetings, you see him almost running out of there. He seems like the guy I thought he was, so far I haven't seen him strapped or carrying any kind of weapon. It's only training camp, stay tuned.

Keon Lattimore - He's best known as being the younger brother of Ray Lewis. He hasn't had much playing time and he's probably a long shot of making the team. Ray Lewis is good television, so he should stick around until the end of the last show and he'll be cut.

Tony Romo - He actually seems like a good guy. Yeah, he reminds me of a typical jock from small-town American, but you would be lucky to pick up some secondhand ladies that probably attach themselves to his entourage.

Terrell Owens - My perception of T.O. has been totally contradicted by this show. I'm not sure if he is playing it up for the cameras or if he is actually a really good guy. He was even shown playing with Jerry Jones' grandchildren. I think he may have actually matured.

Martellus Bennett - I hope this guy eventually takes Jason Witten's job in a few seasons. He's a big, talented, and pretty funny. He may not be the brightest guy in the room, but he'll be a productive tight-end in the NFL.

Todd Lowber - Is it me or does this guy always have the "I don't have a freakin' clue what is happening right now" look on his face? He is a converted basketball player turned wide-receiver, but I don't see any legitimate shot of this guy making this team at all. If by some slim chance that he makes the roster, he will be replaced by a proven receiver who was a cap casualty cut at the end of training camp from another team. Terry Glenn could even come back, Jerry Jones said in the first episode that it is still a possibility.

Jason Witten - I haven't learned much about Witten other than he has a kid that can't hold a helmet on his head without falling over. He better have another amazing year or that Bennett kid could creep up and take his job.

Pacman Jones - T.O. and him had some battles early on in camp that was fun to watch. He also showed his skills of catching six punt returns in a row, while keeping all the previous balls in hands. He is a talented guy and I hope he keeps out of trouble.

Roy Williams - This guy just loves to hit people. Coach Phillips told him to just tag players during a scrimmage and by the end of it he was trying to lay out dudes. Williams changed his number back to his college '38' and looks like it could have changed his focus back towards football and less towards banging members of Destiny's Child.

Zach Thomas - He's an old guy, but if he can rejuvenate his career by playing for a contender, he's in the right situation. The dude was a beast early in his career with Miami, he's a good addition.

Patrick Crayton - Any guy who comes into a team meeting wearing just a towel gets an A+ in my book. He also tied Pacman's punt return total by catching six with all the balls still in his hand. He is definitely ready to step into the 2nd wide-receiver position left open by the cutting of Terry Glenn.

Bobby Carpenter - The television show has not been kind to Mr. Carpenter. They have shown him as a pretty boy and that he is soft. Guys from the team were even talking crap to him by calling him Barbie Carpenter and a punk bitch. Later on in the fourth episode the coaches and players were talking very positively about Carpenter, but seeing him getting the rookie treatment while he's in his third season is always fun to watch. Maybe he can talk the Cowboys into trading for A.J. Hawk or trading him to Green Bay, seems like he was only useful with Hawk on his side.
